This tutorial shows a quick way to take your normal, boring product shot and make it look more professional and elegant. This isn’t a new trick, but it’s a really quick process with Photoshop.

Open your image. I started with this photo of a banana. I masked out the banana and slightly rotated it.

Behind my banana layer, I added a Gradient Adjustment Layer. Adjust the colors to something yellowish, or whatever color you want, and fading to black.

Set the Gradient Adjustment Layer to Style: Radial. I increased the scale to fit my banana better.

Make a rectangular selection on the lower 1/3 of your image. Add a new Solid Color Adjustment Layer under the banana layer and above the Gradient layer. Fill it with black.

Select your banana layer and press [Ctrl + J] to duplicate it. Select your lower, original banana layer and press [Ctrl + T] to bring up the free-transform. Right-click on your bounding box, and choose “Flip Vertical”.

Drag your new, flipped layer down, so that the bottom of the top layer, matches the top of the bottom layer. Confused? Picture:

Click on the Add Layer Mask button on your Layers Palette or go [Layer > Add Layer Mask > Reveal All]. Select the Gradient Fill Tool [G] and select your default colors [D]. With your Layer Mask selected, drag your Gradient from top to bottom until you get a nice reflective effect.

And that’s pretty much it. I explained it out in this tutorial, but it’s a few quick steps for a nice effect.

Open the image that you want to work with and also open any image of a sunset.

Choose Image>Adjustments>Match Color

The Match Color dialog box will open. We will only need to use 2 settings for the task at hand.

Under Source, click the drop down menu and select the image of the sunset. There will be a thumbnail for you to check that you have selected the correct image.

Turn on the preview option if it isn’t already. The working image will now take on the color attributes of the sunset image. Most probably the effect will be a bit too much.

Adjust the Fade slider until you are happy with the result. Move it to the left for more of the inherited color and to the right for the original color.

When you are satisfied, click the OK button to apply the changes. There are many things that can be done with this new Filter in Photoshop CS including using the match color to remove a color cast in a single click.

Here is the photo I am using for this tutorial. Feel free to use it, if you’d like.

Step1

Copy your photo into a new document and name ir ‘Original’. Duplicate the layer ‘Original’ and rename it ‘Desaturated’. Desaturate the layer ‘Desaturated’ so that it has no color by hitting Shift+Ctrl+U (Mac: Shift+Command+U). Duplicate the ‘Desaturated’ layer and name the new layer ‘1′. Now go Filters>Blur>Smart Blur and use these settings:

Radius: 60
Threshold: 100
Best Quality and use Edge Only.
Click OK and invert the layer, now apply a Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur with a radius of 1, and set its Blending Mode to Hard Light (which can by done in the upper left corner of the Layers Palette).

Step 2

Step Duplicate the ‘Desaturated’ layer, rename it to ‘2′, and move it over layer ‘1′. Now go Stylize>Emboss and use these settings:

Height: 1
Amount: 119%
Click OK and set the Blending Mode to Hard Light. Duplicate the ‘Desaturated’ layer, rename it to ‘3′, and move it above layer ‘2′. Apply the Filters>Blur>Smart Blur filter once again but this time use:
Radius: 10
Threshold: 100
Best Quality and Edges Only.
Click OK. Invert the layer and set the Blending Mode to Multiply and Opacity to 40%.

Step 3

Step Once again, duplicate the ‘Desaturated’ layer, rename it to ‘4′ and move it above layer ‘3′. Apply the Filter>Styling>Glowing Edges filter with these settings:
Edge Width: 1
Edge Brightness: 7
Smoothness: 6
Click OK and invert the layer. Set the Blending Mode to Multiply and the Opacity to 40%. Duplicate the layer ‘4′ and Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur it, use a radius of about 3 – 4 this will give us that shaded look. Set the Blending Mode to Multiply and Opacity to 100%.

Step 5

Step Adding Color:
Duplicate the ‘Original’ layer and name it ‘Color’ and move it to the top of all the layers. Set its Blending Mode to Hard Light, duplicate the layer ‘Color’, and set its Blending Mode to Color. Here are the finished results.

With this tutorial, I am going to show you how to achieve a page curl effect in just a few easy steps. This tutorial use the Warp filter so it’s for Photoshop CS2 only.

Let’s start by opening the photo you want to apply the effect to. I used this stock photo.

The first thing that we are going to is to unlock the background layer. To do this simply double click on the padlock icon besides your photo thumbnail in the layers palette.

Now select the Rectangular Marquee Tool

and select a rectangular area in the corner that you want to apply the effect. In the screenshot below I have highlighted my selection.

Now select the gradient tool and draw a black to white gradient in your selection. In this case I drew the gradient from the top right corner to the bottom left corner.

Now deselect (Select->Deselect) or (Ctr+D)
Next go to Edit->Transform->Warp.
Drag the bottom left point towards the center like in the screenshot below.

And here is our result.

Finally apply a Drop Shadow style. These are the settings I used.

This tutorial will create the legendary Kamehameha / Energy ball effect.

Here’s our starting image.

Our first step is to make a new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N). Now we create a soft white brush dot. Choose the brush tool, and in the toolbar change your brush to be around 350px with 0% hardness. Click and make a dot in the center of the hands.

Now duplicate the ball (right click its layer, Duplicate Layer…). With the new layer, take the smudge tool (R) with a soft brush of about 40px and make circular-ish motions, having most of them converge towards the top. You might wish to decrease this layer’s opacity to around 75%.

Next, another new layer (Ctrl + Shift + N). Make two or three more dots, these of differing sizes but all much smaller than the big ball. Take the smudge tool (this time with a smaller brush size) to these also and mess them up so that the smudges of each ball kind of mix together.

From here, you can stop. I like to mess around with the color of the energy, however. Go to the layer menu heading, choose New Adjustment Layer, and choose Color Balance… Using these settings, you can hit just about any shade you’d like.
